Angelo Alessandro Marra, MD, PhD

Proctology and Pelvic Floor Surgery Unit Isola Tiberina - Gemelli Isola Hospital, Rome, Italy

I am a general surgeon with a specific interest in coloproctology and pelvic floor disorders since 2019, during the final years of my residency. When robotic surgery was introduced at our Proctology and Pelvic Floor Surgery Unit (Rome, Italy), I developed a strong interest in Robotic Ventral Mesh Rectopexy, which became the topic of my general surgery residency thesis in 2021.
I completed my PhD in 2024 with a thesis focused on the etiopathogenesis of cryptoglandular anal fistula, investigating the immune system and the cells involved in fistula formation, with the aim of identifying potential future therapeutic targets.
My other areas of interest include defecatory disorders, including Low Anterior Resection Syndrome (LARS), with particular attention to all aspects of their diagnosis and treatment, both surgical and non-surgical.
Since 2023, I have been involved in a research project on the use of Transanal Irrigation (TAI), including electronic-assisted systems, for the early treatment of LARS, in parallel with other treatments currently recommended in the literature.
