Marylise Boutros, MD, FACS, FRCSC is a Staff Colorectal Surgeon at the Cleveland Clinic Florida and the Regional Director of Research for the Digestive Disease Institute. Previously, Dr. Boutros was a Colorectal Surgeon at the Jewish General Hospital (2012-2023) in Montreal, a Professor of Surgery at McGill University, and Colorectal Surgery Program Director at the McGill Faculty of Medicine. Dr Boutros completed her General Surgery residency at McGill University and her Colorectal Surgery residency at Cleveland Clinic Florida. Dr Boutros’s clinical interests are advanced minimally invasive approaches to benign and malignant colorectal and anorectal diseases. She treats colon and rectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, diverticular disease, fecal incontinence and all anorectal disorders. Dr Boutros is an internationally renowned expert in the prevention and treatment of Low Anterior Resection Syndrome (LARS) following rectal cancer treatment.
Dr Boutros has created and led a successful Colorectal Surgery Research Outcomes Lab that focuses on improving patient recovery, long-term outcomes and health-related quality of life following colorectal surgery. Thus far, Dr Boutros has successfully led and completed 6 investigator-initiated randomized-controlled trials, and five cohort studies, involving multiple sites and international participation. Dr Boutros has a stellar track record of scientific contribution to the field, having published 120 peer-reviewed publications (65 senior author) in high-impact surgical journals, >250 conference abstracts, and 14 book chapters in leading surgical textbooks (4,909 citations, H-index: 36), since the start of her academic career. To support her research, Dr. Boutros has been highly successful in obtaining peer-reviewed operating research grants as a principal investigator (>$1.2 mil) over the last 9 years from various surgical and cancer societies, as well as federal and provincial agencies. She has also received consecutive salary awards to support her work since 2013. Dr Boutros is very active and prolific in her participation in the advancement of the field of colorectal surgery. She has held key leadership roles in several surgical societies such as the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons, American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons, Canadian Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons and the Canadian Association of General Surgeons.
